The Sixth Annual Colorado Women of Color in Higher Education Conference will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder March 11-12 at the University Memorial Center. This is the first time that the conference, titled "Coming Together in Struggle and Celebration," has been hosted by CU-Boulder. It is open to men and women. More than 400 students, staff, faculty and community members from around the state are expected to attend.

Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder have licensed a new computer modeling tool that is being used coast-to-coast and abroad to help balance the competing objectives of flood control, water supply, environmental regulations, navigation, power generation and recreational uses on the nation's rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has been selected to host a new student leadership development program sponsored by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. The principle objective of the six-week course called, "Collegiate Leadership Development Program: Building the Next Generation of Latino Leaders," is to cultivate upcoming Latino leaders through greater activism on campus and in their communities.

The Chancellor's Community Lecture Series will host a talk by Richard Devin, producing artistic director of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, titled "The Place of the Artist in U.S. Society" on Wednesday, March 10 at the Boulder Public Library. The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the library's main auditorium and is free and open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and the Boulder Public Library.

The University of Colorado's Center for Humanities and the Arts will host its annual Colloquium March 4-5 on the subject of "Beauty and its Discontents." All events are free and open to the public.

Bruce Lawrence, distinguished professor and chair of the department of religion at Duke University, will deliver the 1998-99 lecture series "American Lectures in the History of Religions" at the University of Colorado at Boulder on March 3, 4 and 5. The theme of the three-part series is "New Faiths, Old Fears: Recent Immigrants and the Challenge of Diasporic Spiritual Practices to North American Norms and Values."

University of Colorado at Boulder scientist Scott Elias will give a lecture at the CU Cortez Center March 12 on the ancient environments of the Bering Land Bridge and early human migrations into the New World. The talk is the second in a series of monthly lectures at the CU Cortez Center by CU-Boulder faculty running from February through May. Co-sponsored by CU President John Buechner and the CU-Boulder Office of Community Relations, the free public talks are held at 7:30 p.m. at 25 N. Market St. in Cortez.

When seniors at Boulder's Fairview High School want feedback on their writing, they can get it via the Internet from students, faculty and staff at the University of Colorado or from local business professionals. A pilot program launched in fall 1998 with 20 students is planned to expand to 100 high school students this semester, said Fairview English teacher Randy Rothberg.

The University of Colorado at Boulder Sewall Residential Academic Program has selected professor Margaret Asirvatham of the chemistry department as its 1999 Sewall Teaching Fellow. The Teaching Fellowship will provide Asirvatham with monetary support to teach a course titled, "The Art and Science of Chemistry," to Sewall students next fall and spring semesters. She also will receive a stipend of $1,500.

A team of four undergraduate engineering students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will test a satellite using micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, technology aboard NASA's KC-135 aircraft in March as part of the Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.
